Inspired by Imagination

Created by acclaimed Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson, the exhibition marks his first project designed specifically for children. Drawing inspiration from the elaborate celebrations of eighteenth-century European courts and the enduring tradition of theatre, the exhibition invites young visitors to step into a world where costumes, storytelling and performance become part of the experience.

Rather than simply viewing artworks, children become active participants. Elaborately designed stage sets feature hand-painted scenes including a woodland forest, a Rococo-inspired garden and a rustic cabin, each brought to life with an array of theatrical props and bespoke costumes. Whether choosing to be an actor, storyteller, audience member or director, every child has the opportunity to invent their own narrative alongside family and friends.  

Kjartansson's lifelong connection to theatre informs every detail of the exhibition. Raised by an actor and theatre director, he grew up surrounded by rehearsals, backstage activity and the magic of performance. That influence is reflected throughout the immersive installation, from striped walls and hand-painted curtains to playful illustrations, theatrical lighting and decorative candelabras that create the feeling of stepping behind the scenes of a grand production.  

Play extends well beyond the stage. Inspired by Kjartansson's fascination with celebrations and elaborate feasts, children can build colourful cake sculptures using oversized soft cushions, gather around whimsical banquet displays and participate in drawing activities inspired by food, theatre and imagination. Every element has been thoughtfully designed to encourage hands-on creativity while fostering confidence through open-ended play.  

The exhibition runs alongside Ragnar Kjartansson: Mercy, offering visitors an opportunity to discover the artist's celebrated video works, where storytelling, music and performance continue to shape his distinctive creative practice. Together, the exhibitions present a rare insight into one of contemporary art's most engaging voices while ensuring younger audiences have an experience designed entirely with them in mind.  

Free to visit at NGV International until 4 October 2026, Children's Play: Ragnar Kjartansson offers a joyful reminder that imagination has no age limit. Through theatre, storytelling and creative play, it creates a space where art becomes something to experience, not simply observe.
