Marshall White Bayside Director and four-time Olympian, Drew Ginn, is preparing for an extraordinary challenge: paddling across the Bass Strait in an ocean ski kayak.

04 February 2024

The journey, covering approximately 240 kilometres of unpredictable seas, strong currents, and the potential for extreme weather conditions, is set for mid-March to mid-April 2024, weather permitting. More than a test of endurance and skill, this quest is a personal tribute to a life lived with purpose and a profound connection to the coast.

From an early age, Drew formed a bond with the scenic coastline from Wilsons Promontory to Phillip Island, particularly in Inverloch and Cape Paterson where he grew up. In these regions, amidst the beauty of the Bass Coast, his father introduced him to the wonders that would shape his lifelong love for the ocean.

The loss of both his parents to cancer has been a driving force behind Drew's determination to make the most of every opportunity and to embrace challenges that push the boundaries of what is possible. His involvement with Tour de Cure, a cause dedicated to raising awareness and funds for cancer research, has been a significant part of his journey. Through cycling tours, endurance challenges, and community events, Drew has been an active participant in the fight against cancer, motivated by the memory of his loved ones and the desire to contribute to a future free of the disease.

The Bass Strait Paddling Challenge combines Drew's passions: his love for the ocean, dedication to cancer research, and desire for personal growth through adventure. With a team of fellow paddlers, Drew will tackle the waters of the Bass Strait, exemplifying resilience, teamwork, and the ability to overcome challenges.

Training for such an endeavour is intense, requiring rigorous physical preparation, a thorough understanding of the sea and the ability to respond to its unpredictability with skill and composure. Safety, preparedness, and respect for the ocean's power are paramount as the team embarks on a journey that promises to be as rewarding as it is challenging.

As Drew and his team ready themselves for this incredible adventure, we invite you to support their cause. By contributing to the Paddling Bass Strait Challenge Fundraiser, you are not only backing a group of intrepid explorers but also contributing to vital cancer research and local initiatives that make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
