Opening on 28 November 2026, the exhibition has been created by London's acclaimed Design Museum in partnership with Mattel, following its record-breaking run in the UK as one of the Design Museum's most visited exhibitions. Rather than simply celebrating nostalgia, the exhibition explores Barbie through the lens of design, examining how the brand has reflected changing ideas around fashion, architecture, innovation and representation since her debut in 1959.
Visitors will discover more than 250 objects, including 150 rare and iconic dolls, alongside dream houses, vehicles, accessories, fashion pieces and original design material that trace Barbie's remarkable evolution. Among the highlights is a highly sought-after first edition Barbie from 1959, complete with her signature black-and-white striped swimsuit, as well as memorable milestones including the first movable Barbie, a rare Talking Barbie prototype and the best-selling Totally Hair™ Barbie.
The exhibition also explores how Barbie has evolved alongside society, showcasing the brand's growing commitment to diversity, representation and storytelling. From pioneering careers to changing beauty standards, Barbie has continually reflected the aspirations and imagination of each new generation, cementing her place as both a cultural icon and a fascinating design object.
Designed by Sam Jacob Studio and curated by Danielle Thom of the Design Museum, the exhibition invites visitors of all ages to journey through Barbie's colourful world, celebrating not only the doll herself but the creativity, craftsmanship and cultural influence that have shaped the brand for 67 years. Whether revisiting childhood memories or discovering Barbie through a contemporary design perspective, the experience offers something for lifelong collectors, families and design enthusiasts alike.
Barbie®: The Exhibition opens at Melbourne Museum on 28 November 2026, with tickets on sale now.
