A Father’s Day Tribute to Legacy

The best lessons fathers teach are often shown rather than spoken, through their actions and values. These qualities inspire the next generation to carry them forward within their own families, careers and communities.

This Father’s Day, Marshall White honours the fathers in our team whose influence continues to guide those around them. Their sons share the advice, habits and values they hold onto, and the legacy they aim to build in both life and real estate.

Robert and James Connell

For Robert Connell, his father James’ influence is seen in both big and small ways. From instilling everyday habits to instilling values of kindness and generosity, James’ presence has shaped Robert’s outlook on life and business.

One of the most valuable lessons James passed on is the importance of humility. A quote on his desk, drawn from Ronald Reagan, reads: “There’s no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.” Robert says his father embodies this approach, valuing impact over ego.

Robert admires his father’s generosity, often going above and beyond for others in meaningful ways. “I’d like to thank him for the opportunities and experiences he’s given me, and for always being a role model — kind, honest, loving and supportive,” he reflects.

Harry and John Bongiorno

Harry Bongiorno credits his father, John, with instilling in him the value of discipline, structure and self-belief. “John has always said the numbers don’t lie. Know your stats, set goals, and break them down into achievable steps,” Harry recalls. John's ever-present notepad is another lasting influence, reinforcing the power of writing things down to strengthen focus, learning and memory.

Beyond habits, Harry says his father’s personality has also played a defining role in shaping his career. “Growing up, John would introduce me to people at events, then step back. It taught me to be confident, engage with new people, and adapt to any environment. That skill has been invaluable in my work.”

When asked what he would thank his dad for, Harry didn't hesitate: “I would thank him for the life he’s given me. While he can be tough on me at times, I know he always has my best interests at heart. He never stops believing in me and always has my back, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.”

Tom and Andrew Hayne

For Tom Hayne, his father, Andrew, has been a constant source of guidance and inspiration. From simple lessons — “Honesty is the best policy” — to big-picture wisdom — “Bite off more than you can chew, and chew like crazy” — Andrew’s advice has stayed with Tom throughout his career.

The pair also share many personal passions, from golf to boating, creating a bond that extends well beyond business. Tom admires his father’s ability to set a vision and pursue it with determination. “When he sets a goal, nothing will get in his way,” he says.

Above all, Tom is grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Andrew at Marshall White. “It’s impossible to narrow it down to one thing, but I’d like to thank Dad for giving me the chance to begin my career here. It has made me who I am today, and I love coming to work with him.”
