Malvern offers a suburban sanctuary that you’ll never want to leave.

A green and expansive area, it’s home to some of Melbourne’s most prestigious properties, canopied by wide and leafy streets. Locals enjoy luscious parks, a relaxing swim centre, excellent transport links and some of the country’s best schools. It’s impossible to visit Malvern without dropping by its beloved patisserie, Millstone Patisserie & Cafe. Founded by chef Alice Wright after training in Paris, its French roots are undeniable. Customers are greeted in French by name, its homemade pastries and croissants fly from the shelves and the exceptional cakes are accompanied by exceptional service. The croissants are a must – that is, if you can get your hands on one before they sell out.

A favourite lunch haunt is Master of None, a cafe housed in a former garage that owner Tennyson Andrew transformed with his own hands. Serving rustic food that matches it’s warm and rustic interior, it provides a home away from home. There’s a handy coffee window for customers on their way to the train station, but for those with a little more time, sit inside on one of Tennyson’s custom-made chairs to watch the world walk by – with a delicious cup of coffee and toastie of course.

Another local gem is Milton Wine Shop. The intimate wine bar offers an impressive selection of wine from around the world, and is a haven for trying something new and rare. Low intervention and natural wines nobly sit alongside the great classics, offering diversity with every drop. The store has created an active community of wine aficionados and enthusiasts, with special events running throughout the year. It’s a store you’ll find yourself visiting again and again.

Shoppers are spoiled for choice in this well-heeled suburb, with some of the finest fashion and homeware stores hugging Glenferrie Road and hidden around quiet corners, just waiting to be discovered.

Mondocherry is one of these stores, quietly resting on Claremont Avenue. Opened by sisters Clare and Joy to share their love for handmade arts with creative locals, it’s a love letter to artisanal products that are created with care. Clare’s iconic paper art adorn the walls, beside helpful colour samples – allowing customers to dream up custom pieces that are then matched to their wallpaper or favourite clothing item. A treat for everybody involved.

With some of Melbourne’s most regal properties, Malvern offers immaculate Edwardian and Victorian-era homes with aplomb. Their block sizes are slightly larger than further inner city suburbs, like Windsor or Armadale, providing spacious living inside and out.
