Live Like a local

Life moves at a different pace in Melbourne’s lesser-known seaside suburb of Hampton. With its own sandy beach on the fringe of Port Phillip Bay, locals regularly flock to the coast for a swim – and on clear days you will catch breathtaking views of the Bellarine Peninsula across the water. Hampton truly comes alive on the weekends when you can enjoy a stroll on the sand before grazing at a plethora of adored local haunts, from bustling cafes and delicatessens to eclectic cocktail bars.

Enjoy the exquisite tastes of northern France at Éclair, where you’ll experience the luxuries of freshly baked artisan products outside your back door – ranging from croissants and pain au chocolat to more delectable savoury treats. Owned French baker Yves and his Japanese wife, they’ll greet you by name as you walk through the door. As if this wasn’t enough, they boast exceptionally good coffee to pair with your unforgettable lunchtime indulgence.

When dining at Sebastian’s Food and Wine you’ll get so comfortable you’ll want to settle in for the day. With a large courtyard and open-plan tables, they cater to everyone in the community. The Friday pop-up burger night ‘Straight outta Hampton’, is a particular favourite with the locals, and outside bike hooks make it a friendly rest stop for weekend riders. Sebastian’s is at the forefront of Hampton’s culinary scene, and with their menu changing seasonally you’ll always get to experience something innovative and new.

Hampton’s newest cocktail bar, Garf’s Bar, offers an incredible knowledge and range of gin, and an exhilarating atmosphere that attracts an eclectic mix of patrons. With 53 types of gin – including a gin paddle called ‘I don’t drink gin’ for the vodka drinkers – it’s Melbourne’s version of a London classic. They also offer indulgent meat and cheese platters to accompany your next favourite cocktail.

Hampton was once a small fishing village and is now a relaxed seaside escape, dotted with impressive real estate. Many of the houses here take on a historical charm, or are clean, crisp and modern – making the most of their location by gazing out to sea through open frontages and large glass windows. No matter how accustomed to the area you may become, it is always a treat to see the boats bob on the sea as the sun dips below the horizon.

The Hampton lifestyle is one of leisure, taking a literal step away from Melbourne’s inner city rush. Local residents and businesses proudly work side-by-side to create a strong sense of community, where first name greetings are a common occurrence. For families, both Hampton Primary School and St Mary’s School are a stone’s throw away from the main street, and there are a number of leash-free areas for dog lovers – including stunning Sandringham Harbour. With an easy-going and active lifestyle on offer, it’s no surprise that those who live here seldom find a reason to venture further afield.
