Live Like a Local

Tucked away between Canterbury and Balwyn, Deepdene although small, has a quietly exclusive charm that captivates families with its sought-after school zone and low-profile vibe. Stately homes line its meandering streets and a sense of community defines this much-loved hidden gem. Once stripped of its postal relevance in the mid-2000s, its proud inhabitants fought to recover it after much protest.

Living in Deepdene allows immediate access to the stunning Anniversary trail, which is full of life on the weekend, from bike riders, walkers and all varieties of dogs.  A favourite tree lined trail running from Kew East through to Ashburton. Exercise is easy in Deepdene."

Deepdene may be the most exclusive suburb you’ve never heard of.

Nestled between Balwyn and Kew, it was formerly a neighbourhood within the suburb of Balwyn until April 2010, when it was officially recognised as a bounded locality by the Office of Geographic Names. But don’t let that fool you – Deepdene is an area steeped in history and tradition. With sweeping, tree-lined streets and grand, established homes, the area oozes prestige. Boasting a boutique shopping strip, its own tennis club and access to some of the state’s best primary and secondary schools, Deepdene is one of Melbourne’s best-kept secrets.

Despite its intimate size, locals are well-catered for, particularly when visiting The Providore. Effortlessly combining contemporary lunch and brunch with traditional Asian fare, the menu is rich and diverse – it’s sure to please any palate. When ordering, it’s hard to go past the goodlife bowl, lamb croquettes or the braised pork belly and yam. Local tip: head in for Happy Hour between 2pm and 3:30pm to snare a beer and chips for just $10, and a seat outdoors to soak up the sun.

While you may be in Melbourne’s east, travel to Italy with authentic woodfired pizza at Postino. The fully licensed venue serves up some of Melbourne’s best Italian-style pizzas, fired in an impressive three-tonne oven imported directly from Naples. If pizza doesn’t make the crust, choose from the delicious selection of handmade gnocchi and ravioli, truffled polenta chips or calamari. With a choice of indoor or outdoor dining, as well as take away options, Postino is sure to quickly become a firm favourite favoured by the whole family.

This attractive suburb is home to Melbourne’s elite, and this is reflected in the suburb’s exclusive shopping. Housed within a sprawling setting, Town and Country is a mecca for indoor and outdoor home needs. Indoors you’ll find a carefully curated collection of homeware to kitchenware, soft furnishings, kids’ items and more. Outside is a gardener’s delight, with a fully stocked nursery and garden supplies section. Once you have made your way through the extensive range on offer, refuel or unwind in the adjacent café, which serves delicious coffee and a modern brunch menu. With all of this on offer, it is little wonder Town and Country is a local institution.

For well-heeled locals, City and Coast is a treasure trove of delights. This boutique store offers an exquisite, handpicked range of cashmere shawls, fur ponchos and jackets, windcheaters and beach dresses, along with seasonal fashions and accessories. Complete your look with one of the latest designs in Louenhide bags, clutches and purses, or perhaps a signature piece of Bianc jewellery.

There’s no question that locals move to Deepdene for the lifestyle. Close enough to the city to make commuting a breeze, but far enough away so that coming home feels like an escape, Deepdene is a jewel of the city’s east. Its architecture is in keeping with neighbouring suburbs like Balwyn and Camberwell, featuring the suburban staples of spacious stately homes, lawns, gardens, pools, heritage orders and a family-friendly atmosphere. Combining comfort with convenience, it is easy to see why this prestigious pocket in the heart of the east is one of Melbourne’s most tightly held suburbs.
