When Mammoth opened in Armadale in 2015, owners Jamie and Loren McBride breathed new life into the suburb.

As the south-side’s answer to all of the hip cafes springing up north of the river, it’s now a well-loved local favourite. Renowned for its architecturally designed digs and exciting food choices – your taste buds will never get bored at this local institution.

If an evening tipple’s more to your taste, look no further than Bouzy. The wine bar was founded by charmingly eccentric restaurateur Jason McLaren Jones as a tongue-in- cheek take on the classic Parisian ‘bar à vins’ – and it’s a must visit. The wine menu is deep, and the dishes offer an impressive variety of French classics – from baked escargot to the venue’s bestseller, the steak frites. Local tip: if you drop by during happy hour they serve oysters at $2 a pop alongside a generous drink menu.

Armadale is perhaps known best for its grand Victorian and Edwardian homes. Originally built for merchants and gold prospectors, they now command millions of dollars apiece. Wander through the back streets for impressive historic mansions that neighbour period homes and quaint terraces, and you’ll find stylish apartments on the High Street. Home to a strong sense of community and some of Victoria’s best schools, Armadale is a luxurious suburb that has something for everyone.
