Founded in 1683 as a blacksmith's forge in Germany's Black Forest, Gaggenau has spent centuries refining its expertise in metal craftsmanship, precision engineering and culinary innovation. Today, that legacy finds its most compelling expression in the Gaggenau Expressive series. More than a collection of ovens and culinary appliances, the series represents a bold evolution of the Gaggenau design language, balancing heritage with contemporary living. For Head of Design Sven Baacke, Industrial Designer Alexander Stuhler and User Interaction and Interface Designer Soeren Strayle, the Expressive series is not simply a new product launch, but the beginning of a new chapter for Gaggenau.
"This new cavity series is significant because it's the first completely new design in almost twenty years," says Baacke. "It's not just an appliance but a piece of art." For Gaggenau, the challenge was to create a collection that honoured the brand's heritage while confidently looking towards the future, balancing tradition and innovation in a way that feels both timeless and contemporary.
Inspired by Bauhaus principles and modernist architecture, the Expressive series embraces the philosophy that exceptional design should feel intuitive, purposeful and enduring. Central to the collection is Gaggenau's distinctive "two frames and a circle" concept, where sculptural geometry, seamless surfaces and refined proportions create an aesthetic that is at once understated and unforgettable. "The beauty of this design lies in its subtlety," explains Stuhler. "There is no contradiction between aesthetics and functionality." This harmony between visual appeal and performance sits at the heart of the Expressive series, where every detail has been meticulously considered, from reduced visible joins to perfected surfaces and integrated lighting.
At the centre of the collection lies the floating control ring, a tactile and visual statement that encapsulates Gaggenau's approach to innovation. Developed over many years and countless prototypes, the floating ring bridges the physical and digital worlds, creating an interaction that feels both familiar and revolutionary. "We asked ourselves how far we could push innovation while ensuring it remained tangible for future users," says Strayle. Hidden behind the seamless glass façade, the display appears to float, creating what he describes as "a tangible element within a digital environment, where both worlds seamlessly merge."
The floating ring also serves as a tribute to Gaggenau's origins as a forge. Crafted from stainless steel through a highly specialised process combining precision milling with expert metalwork, it represents centuries of craftsmanship distilled into a single design feature. Hand-finished stainless steel, precision chamfered edges and meticulous detailing ensure that every element serves both form and function, reinforcing the brand's enduring commitment to quality.
Yet the true luxury of the Expressive series lies beyond its sculptural form. Advanced heating systems, intelligent cooking programmes, integrated digital connectivity and intuitive interfaces that respond to the user's presence have all been designed to enhance the experience of cooking and living without compromising the purity of the design. As Stuhler reflects, "It's not just another oven – it's an experience that redefines what luxury in the kitchen can feel like."
In a world increasingly drawn to timelessness over trends, the Gaggenau Expressive series stands as a reminder that true craftsmanship cannot be rushed or replicated. It is a celebration of heritage, precision and enduring beauty; an expression not only of how we cook, but of how we choose to live.
