In Conversation with Articolo Studios

Articolo Studios has established a distinctive design language recognised around the world. What philosophy guides each collection? 

At the heart of every Articolo collection is what we call the 'Art of Light'. Articolo designs feel contemporary and timeless with a European sophistication, not driven by trends, but created to remain relevant for decades to come. 

My design language was shaped by my formative years as Melbourne Editor of Vogue Entertaining and Travel Magazine. Styling a photoshoot, you would style the shot and then remove two-thirds; the 'less is more' approach. We apply the same ethos to our designs. The engineering behind each fixture is often highly complex, yet visually there is a refined simplicity, and achieving that balance is what gives every Articolo piece its timeless aesthetic. 

Why is preserving traditional artisan techniques so important in an increasingly automated world? 

Many of the techniques we work with have been refined and passed down through generations. That tacit knowledge is irreplaceable, and the artisans we work with are used to us challenging the materials and pushing their techniques, exploring and experimenting rather than opting for the easier outcome. 

The beauty of the handmade is that no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Subtle nuances and imperfections give an object its individuality and soul. Every Articolo design reflects the many hands that have produced it and celebrates the craftsmen and women whose skill we deeply respect. There is no substitute for the handmade. 

How do you balance sculpture and functionality while keeping each piece timeless? 

Decorative lighting and furniture have become statement pieces within the most considered interiors, thoughtfully selected to enhance a space and create atmosphere and soul. Articolo's sculptural forms are designed with a sophisticated layering of materials, with each fitting becoming wall and ceiling jewellery or pieces of light sculpture for the home. 

We continually explore new materials, technologies and manufacturing techniques. Light, form and materiality are intrinsically connected, and the design process is an ongoing dialogue between all three. 

Beyond functionality, how can thoughtful lighting shape the mood of a space? 

Lighting has the extraordinary ability to completely change how we experience a space. In a world that is more fast-paced than ever, thoughtfully considered lighting provides a sense of cocooning from the outside world. Softly dimmed light creates layering, warmth and personality, inviting moments of calm and reflection. When each fixture is purposefully selected, the shadow play of light animates walls and ceilings, bringing depth, atmosphere and soul to a space. 

What's next for Articolo Studios? 

We have always been focused on creating exceptional design with integrity, craftsmanship and longevity, and that philosophy remains unchanged. The next chapter is about pushing the boundaries of engineering and materiality while expanding the 'world of Articolo', with plans to grow our presence internationally through carefully considered showrooms and new categories on the horizon. 

Creatively, I still have an enormous library of ideas that I'm constantly refining. Some designs take years before they feel resolved, and I enjoy that process of experimentation and continual improvement, always challenging ourselves to achieve something genuinely new, yet unmistakably Articolo.
