Glen Iris

Live like a Local

Tucked away in Melbourne’s inner east, Glen Iris offers a village-like atmosphere conveniently close to the city. Abundant with plantlife, it’s hard to miss this suburb’s connection with the natural world.

“The style of the city shifts out here. The graffiti-adorned laneways are a mere memory and you find yourself falling in love with a suburban oasis. ”
- Jason Brinkworth

Sprawling over undulating hills, there’s pretty parks, leafy cycling routes and walking trails, all canopied by established trees. Attracting families and professionals young and old, you’ll find a diverse community looking for a slower pace of life with the space and cafe culture to enjoy it. Spend your weekends at the local swimming pool – topped off by a delicious meal at one of the many quirky eateries – or pack a picnic and head to gorgeous Gardiners Creek. Well-connected by train, roads and bicycle paths, you’re never too far away from the city if you need it – but you’ll probably find you never want to leave.

If you’re looking for your next favourite brunch spot, Mr. Tucci may just be it. Graced with tall ceilings, generous light and indoor greenery from top to toe, it embodies Glen Iris’ relaxed way of life, right where the high street meets Gardiners Creek. The ship is steered by three young siblings, with mum on hand to produce elegantly presented cakes for that tempting after meal treat. When you visit, there’s no doubt that you’ll feel like you’re also part of the family.

Another local favourite on the Malvern Road strip is Mr. Foxx, a cosy corner cafe and restaurant with a global approach to wholesome food. Their all-day locally inspired breakfasts are a hit with residents and new-comers alike, with the corn fritters topped with poached egg and walnut crumbs prove to be an absolute winner. Their interior decor is warm and welcoming, filled with an installation of smooth and satisfying timber panels complimented by exposed red-brick walls. Come for their signature falafel and labneh salad with pomegranate, but stay for an afternoon spent basking in the sunlight of their spacious courtyard with an affogato in hand.

When it comes to nightlife in Glen Iris, there’s no better spot to find yourself than at Tom Pockett Cellars. Specialising in small batch wine from an unwaveringly passionate family owned and operated enterprise, they place as much soul into curating their drinks as they do their evening entertainment. Their ever-popular Friday night seventies and eighties DJ sessions never fail to get the crowd moving, but just as enticing are their live acoustic Sundays – a much more relaxed affair that sees couples and friends sharing antipasti boards over a glass of local wine. Of course, if you’re looking for a lively night out, bustling St Kilda, Prahran and Windsor are right around the corner.

An historic pillar of the suburb is the iconic Harold Holt Swim Centre, a much-loved facility for all members of the local community. Originally built in 1927 as municipal swimming baths, it was renovated in the 1960s to be a fine example of Brutalist architecture. More recently, the council has been upgrading these facilities further, and today the health hub now offers even more activities for locals to dive into. Take part in the Learn to Swim program, attend group fitness or hydrotherapy classes, or top it all off with a dip in the spa. Offering child care facilities for little ones, it caters for the whole family.

Glen Iris is ripe for family life with generous suburban staples, including spacious blocks, large period homes, sprawling gardens, pools, lawns and a family friendly lifestyle. You’ll find Art Deco properties and generous Californian bungalows, along with more recently renovated properties and modern apartments. With plenty of parks, schools and space to enjoy the good things in life, there’s a lot to love about Glen Iris.
