Valuable Victorians

News & Insights
Rich in street appeal, and built to stand the test of time, a Late Victorian period home, whether renovated or unrenovated, is always a valuable investment...

Constructed between 1875-1901, these homes first appeared in Melbourne’s inner urban neighbourhoods during the post-goldrush boom, and their ornate facades and grand proportions reflect the economic growth and optimism of the era.

While many were torn down in the mid to late 20th century, their historical significance to suburban streetscapes is now recognised and protected by law, making the remaining homes even more valuable. Today, most local councils’ heritage protection rules apply to the beautiful facades only. This means outdated interiors can be upgraded and extended to suit contemporary living.

Desirable characteristics of Late Victorian era architecture may include:

  • Italianate elements such as rendered walls, tall parapets, arches, and moulded ornaments
  • Multi-coloured (polychromatic) and tuck-pointed brickwork
  • Timber houses generally have square-edged weatherboards, (block-front) simulating blocks of stonework
  • Intricate iron lacework around verandahs and balconies
  • Tessellated tiling on verandah floors and entry pathways
  • Triple bay windows
  • Blue and red coloured glass beside entry doors
  • Arched windows and doorways

Marshall White always has a swag of beautiful Victorian era homes listed for sale, particularly in the Port Phillip, Stonnington, Boroondara and Bayside areas.
