Effortless, classic, inspired – Australian fashion label búl ticks all of the boxes for contemporary womenswear. Founder and designer, Virginia Martin, took some time out with us to chat about how architecture and landscapes are so eloquently explored throughout her collections.
Who or what was your style inspiration growing up? Has this changed?
VM: My style inspiration has definitely grown and matured throughout the years. When I was younger I was inspired by a lot of art and was also a bit edgier. But as time has passed my style has become more refined and an evolved expression of where I am today.
Each of your collections are inspired be a particular landscape. Is it the built environment or the natural environment that usually inspires a collection?
VM: The built environment and the natural environment. I look to all aspects of a place; the intriguing culture, the ever-changing landscape and the diverse people all culminate to form inspiration for each collection.
What came first, the desire to design, or the desire to travel?
VM: Surrounded by a Dad who loved to travel and a Mum who sewed, the desire to design and to travel has been forever present throughout my lifetime.
You call Melbourne home – what’s your favourite part of Melbourne? What do you love about it?
VM: The amazing culture we have here in Melbourne – from the galleries and great cafes to hidden bars and restaurants. You can walk just out of a bustling city and feel like you’re in the calm and quietness of the countryside. There is something for everyone here in Melbourne.
