Cosy Winter Spots with Open Fires

There’s nothing like a cosy open fire to cheer up your spirits on a cold winter’s day. Take a look at some of our favourites…

There’s nothing like a cosy open fire to cheer up your spirits on a cold winter’s day. Dancing flames and radiant warmth provides an ambience that cannot be replicated with any other heating source.

Melbourne’s bountiful range of pubs, cafés and restaurants, many located in historic buildings with working fireplaces, offer the perfect escape on a cold, chilly day.

Take a look at some of our favourite spots:

The Local Taphouse in Carlisle Street offers a warm respite from modern living with its vintage décor and welcoming vibe. It has two fireplaces to keep you cosy – including one on the rooftop terrace. The perfect place to rug up and enjoy a Sunday Session.

Donovans is a St.Kilda institution, located right on the beach. Its iconic sandstone open fire places surrounded by comfy couches are the perfect place to relax after a delicious lunch, enjoying views of the bay. There’s even a private dining room with its own fireplace – perfect for a celebratory family dinner.

Studley Park Boathouse Café is rich in history and is one of Melbourne’s most iconic establishments. Warming up in front of a cosy fireplace with a hot chocolate after a row on the tranquil lake would be the perfect way to wind down.

Down on the Peninsula the vast open-fire place in the Tavern Bar at Mornington’s Royal Hotel on the Esplanade has been keeping locals warm and toasty on wintery afternoons for more than 100 years.

The fires are aplenty at this carnivore’s delight eatery which is located in the old Beehive Hotel, one of Hawthorn’s landmark buildings, and the ambience is fuelled further with the cooking done over a Mallee root and redgum coal open-flame grill. “I’ve been and it’s brilliant,” says Davide Lettieri, Partner, Auctioneer, Boroondara office.

A favourite among locals, Mount Erica is a contemporary pub sitting on the corner of High Street and Williams Road in Prahran. With multiple zones including an outdoor courtyard, indoors, the dining room and lounge area houses a large original fireplace perfect for those cold winter nights.
