Suburb Spotlight on Balwyn

Located just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Balwyn has something for everybody: exemplary family living close to excellent schools, a serene place to retire and a sophisticated destination for shopping and cafes.

A family oriented area with a vibrant community culture, leafy Balwyn is an enticing prospect in the heart of Boroondara. Located just 10 kilometres from the city centre, Balwyn has something for everybody: exemplary family living close to excellent schools, a serene place to retire and a sophisticated destination for shopping and cafes.

‘Balwyn was named after the 1858 vineyard and rural retreat of then editor of The Age Andrew Murray,’ Marshall White property manager Leonard Zhang explains. ‘The property was located on Balwyn Road and according to Mr Murray, the name was Gaelic for ‘wine-house’.’

One of the main reasons residents flock to Balwyn is for its lush treelined streets and verdant public parks. Leonard says, ‘Balwyn residents are spoiled for choice when it comes to parks, with Balwyn Park, Macleay Park and the famous Koonung Creek Reserve, just to name a few.’

Beckett Park is one of the area’s best, incorporating a massive playground the kids will adore, the Centenary Tower and the Maranoa Botanic Gardens, Australia’s first botanical gardens dedicated to indigenous plants. If you’re a keen swimmer, the Boroondara Sports Complex offers three public pools for both training and recreation purposes, while the Boroondara Leisure Centre features an outdoor pool, fitness gym and basketball courts.

For all your shopping and entertainment needs, look no further than Whitehorse Road, home to a charming array of boutiques, cafes and restaurants. One of its most iconic destinations is the Palace Balwyn Cinema, a palatial Art Deco cinema that has been immaculately preserved while still functioning as a modern cinema. The strip also incorporates Balwyn Shopping Centre, a thriving commercial district that incorporates everyday shops with stylish specialty boutiques.

A wide selection of cuisine is available in Balwyn. Fans of Asian cuisine are in luck, as the area offers plenty of options, including Chinese BBQ eatery Supreme.J Kitchen. Augello’s Ristorante and Pizzeria offers classic and delicious Italian fare, or you could enjoy brunch and a coffee at Mr Hendrick’s. For a nightcap, try trendy cocktail bar The Advocate, or sample some fusion Japanese and American cuisine at Onepluspiece Café.

Public transport is readily available in the suburb. Trams run along Whitehorse Road as well as buses on Balwyn Road, which will take you to the nearby Canterbury train station. The CBD is also in easy reach, within about a half hour drive.

The median rental price in Balwyn is $595 per week (3BR), with the majority of residents being older couples and established families. However, the rate of young and single people moving to the area is on the rise. ‘Family homes, three to four bedroom homes and townhouses, especially those in the Balwyn High School zone, are in high demand,’ Leonard says.

The area’s attraction lies in its broad ranging appeal. ‘It may feel like a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life, but it’s just ten kilometres away from the city centre, which the residents love,’ says Leonard. Embrace this blend of tranquility and cosmopolitan character for a truly outstanding life in a prestigious pocket of Melbourne’s east.
