Agents at Leisure:
Schulim Krimper (1893-1971)
Marshall White Director, James Redfern has a passionate interest in the rich history of Australian made furniture, in particular, custom-made pieces of the highest quality local materials. Here he explores the works of Schulim Krimper.
Schulim Krimper was born in 1893 in Sereth, Bukovina. He managed to obtain a permit to immigrate to Australia in 1939, after living in Berlin for a short time.
Krimper became a sought after furniture maker occupying a unique position in the history of the crafts in Australia. Designing beautifully finished, functional pieces during the 1950’s and 60’s from his modest St Kilda workshop. I see his work often in many homes throughout the inner Eastern suburbs. His furniture can also be found at the NGV and the Powerhouse Museum.
An extraordinary man who loved his craft, his work is well worth looking out for if you’re interested in Australian post-modern furniture design.
