A suburb in high demand, there is something for everyone in South Yarra. A prestigious yet diverse neighbourhood located just four kilometres from the CBD and one of the oldest and most affluent suburbs in Melbourne, South Yarra is bordered by the Yarra River and Richmond to the north, Prahran to the south and Toorak to the east.

Housing an extensive commercial district, this hilly riverside suburb is equal parts polished as it is trendy, proving infinitely enduring to both young and old. With a median rental price of $680 per week, this bustling, upscale locale is renowned for the diverse lifestyle on offer.

‘The rental market is very strong, particularly in and around the Royal Botanic Gardens, especially if you have a car space and views of the gardens,’ says Marshall White property manager and South Yarra expert, Jayde Keysers, who specialises in the premium end of the market.

Marshall White leasing consultant, Grace Morley, who grew up in the area, agrees that the rental market in South Yarra is extremely competitive.

‘There is always high demand for properties in South Yarra due to the convenience of the location, especially for professionals and families,’ says Grace.

In the heart of South Yarra, the iconic Chapel Street precinct is well known for boutique shopping, popular bars, cafes and dining options, while the Jam Factory is a local hotspot, with upmarket retail, cosy dining and cinemas on offer. Toorak Road is a mecca for high end hair and beauty salons.

Other local favourites include Bar Carolina, a trendy contemporary Italian establishment,  The Stables of Como, a chic café located on the grounds of the historic Como House and serving up a delicious seasonal menu to its well heeled crowd. Kanteen, a celebrated café on the banks of the Yarra River  is celebrated for their brunch offering, and for a finer dining experience, locals turn to classic French restaurant, Entrecôte or the locals’ institution, France Soir.

With some of the highest property prices in Melbourne, South Yarra showcases some of the city’s most prestigious residential addresses. The heritage listed Como House was built in 1847 and represents a historically significant mix of Australian Regency and classic Italianate architecture. The home and surrounding gardens now serve as a popular tourist attraction for the area.

‘I love the atmosphere in South Yarra. There’s always plenty of people walking around and it’s easy to grab a bite to eat or coffee without having to travel far,’ says Grace

South Yarra boasts some of Melbourne’s best preserved, richly decorated and highly coveted Victorian terrace houses built during the late 19th century. Additionally, there are a number of noteworthy Art Deco apartment buildings overlooking the Yarra River, including ‘Beverley Hills’ on Darling Street, which retains the original 1930’s grotto style swimming pool for use of the complex residents.

Surrounded by a wealth of lush parks and gardens, South Yarra is a unique verdant retreat. The tranquil Fawkner Park and Royal Botanic Gardens provide the perfect location for a weekend picnic or walk.

‘South Yarra holds endless appeal for its absolute liveabilty. Everything is so close and the gardens throughout really reflect the active lifestyle of the people within,’ says Jayde.

Well serviced by public transport, South Yarra has two train stations, as well as multiple tram and bus routes.

Impressive schools in the area include Melbourne High School which houses a landmark 1930s Gothic style main building. Melbourne Girls Grammar School is also located in South Yarra as well as Melbourne Grammar School, which retains grand, historic bluestone buildings. Two of Victoria’s oldest primary schools, Christ Church Grammar School and South Yarra Primary School are also in the suburb.

Renowned for facilitating a luxe lifestyle in close proximity to the city, its easy to see why South Yarra is such a highly sought postcode.
