Here are our 6 favourite spots for topping up one’s wellness and self-care.

Studio 2/22 Cecil Place, Prahran VIC

There is a lot to take in when you first enter the cavernous studio at Humming Puppy. However, the most striking feature is not its natural timber walls and beautifully arranged mats – it’s the hum that resonates throughout the shala. The four classes: Mellow, Unified, Dynamic and Deepen Your Hum, range from a slow-paced, low intensity that includes gentle flows, to high intensity classes that includes stronger, longer holds, Vinyasa flows and advanced postures. In all classes, the tiered studio gives every student a view of the instructor, while you can also choose which mat you’d like to practice on prior to the class.

The first-of-its-kind studio blends mindfulness, meditation, yoga and Dynamic Fitness for an experience that covers both the physical and mental elements of healthy living. There are more than 120 classes on offer per week, including several different types of yoga practice, three styles of mindfulness meditation, as well as Pilates and Dynamic Fitness. Yoga Flow, Yoga Slow, Yin Yoga, and Beginner’s Yoga are all available, while mums-to-be and new parents can also practice regularly with pre-natal and Mini Melons classes.

Hip-hop and yoga are not generally associated with each other, but Yoga 213 has merged the two to open up a new world for people who may not have previously tried yoga. Offering Vinyasa, Yin and Hip-Hop style yoga classes, with chill yoga classes also available, Yoga 213 pays homage to hip-hop and the collision of yoga with music. When you walk in, expect a calming space where natural timbers sit next to an oil portrait Sammy painted of Notorious BIG. White walls and natural light combine to present a relaxed studio, perfect to find solace in the freedom and practice of yoga.

The studio offers a number of yoga styles including Vinyasa Flow, Align, Yoga Fundamentals and Yin, but the most distinctive is Yoga Tune Up. Warrior One Yoga is currently one of only three practitioners in Australia to be trained in this style. YTU is an integration of yoga poses, corrective exercises and self-message that aims to heal and strengthen your body against chronic pain. It sees the use of special Yoga Tune Up therapy balls, allowing participants to literally roll out their muscles. The team is dedicated to tailoring a program that suits your individual needs and goals. With a maximum number of 16 participants in each class, you can expect a personalised and engaging experience.

With five styles to choose from, there’s plenty of variety to suit any skill level. Hot Yoga is perfect for those who are new to the practice, and features a system of postures and breathing exercises that are designed specifically for the 37-degree room temperature. With studios currently based in Richmond, St Kilda and the Mornington Peninsula, Grass Roots is bringing serenity to the city, one breath at a time.

Middle Park wellness studio, Madam Heap, draws a focus on mindful living, teaching the practices of mindfulness and meditation, which can help you experience more from life as your wander down its tricky path. At Madam Heap, mindfulness is treated as the key to health, helping you to gain a greater awareness of what is going on inside, teaching you to act rather than react to whatever is thrown your way. Depending on your choice of class, your session will be run individually or in a group. Sessions are tailored to your skill set, experience and personal needs allowing you to gain the most from each session and step away from Madam Heap with a wealth of knowledge.
