A home with a beautiful garden most certainly increases its value to potential buyers and one of the highlights of an Australian garden is the lawn.

Lawns have received some bad press in recent years with water scarcity and restrictions affecting gardeners in Melbourne. However with the use of drought tolerant species, water crystals in soil mixes and water tanks, enjoying a lawn is back in vogue.

Autumn is a key time to take care of your lawn and as the days become cooler and shorter, it’s a great time to tend to any damage done by Summer and prepare. So what can you do this Autumn to set your garden apart and ready for a Spring sale?

Tend to Shady Spots

Gardens with beautiful trees often have issues with lawns left in the shade. During Autumn it’s important to rake regularly and consider trimming back any trees that affect your lawn.

Weeding

Summer may have left your lawn with summer weeds such as crowsfoot or creeping oxtails. Now is a good time to hand remove them and/or apply herbicide before the cooler weather settles in and your lawn becomes weaker.

Mowing

During Winter your lawn will needs as much sunlight as possible so raise the height of your mower in Autumn. Lawns that are frost affected also tend to brown off on the very tips with green undergrowth below so higher mowing will reveal a lovely lawn.

Autumn Watering

Windy weather can be just as drying as a hot day so don’t overlook the need for watering your lawn during Autumn.

Fertilising

Most gardeners recommend lawns are fertilised during May. This will give your lawn a lovely green appearance during Winter. But be careful to reduce the wear and tear during this time and try to keep off the lawn as much as possible.

Aerating

Autumn lawn care also includes aerating your lawn with a garden fork which improves soil drainage and also stimulates root growth. This time is also an excellent time to seed your lawn to repair any worn patches.

Laying Turf

Autumn is a good time to lay new turf as there’s enough time for roots to establish themselves before Winter. With some rainy days ahead, you also won’t need to water your new lawn as much to get it established.
