French style represents elegance, prosperity and grandeur and the French Provincial style is coveted by many buyers. The premium end of the property market often gravitates towards this most prestigious of styles which stands the test of time.

French Provincial is not a historical architectural style such as Victorian, Edwardian or Federation, rather it is a style inspired from the grand houses of Provence in France. This is not a new point of inspiration for Melbourne homes, in fact French provincial architectural elements can be found in some of Melbourne’s heritage listed properties such as Como House which celebrates French heritage through its Paris to Provence festival, sponsored by Marshall White. Further afield in Eltham, Heritage listed Montsalvat was designed to emulate French Gothic with a very provincial styled Great Hall. It seems the classic image of the French chateau has always been aspirational for Australians.

Both heritage homes and new residences employ the use of key French design elements such as formal gardens, grand driveways, window and roof details and ornamental plasterwork. There is also symmetry to French inspired floor plans with formal areas at the front of the home creating a welcoming yet grand entrance.

Melbourne based Metrobuild is an authority on French inspired design with a diverse portfolio of residential apartments, focusing primarily in Toorak and surrounding suburbs. We asked the company’s Associate, Justina Ding, why she though French Provincial style was so popular.

“I believe the French Provincial style is popular in Melbourne because it is inherently timeless,” said Justina.

“The colour palette is usually warm neutrals which are gentle and welcoming. French style furnishings comprise of natural materials like stone, timber, linen and wool. With all natural elements comes imperfections in the grain, colour, shape or form, and that’s what helps it feel lived in and comfortable,” she said.
