Moving into an apartment comes with a unique set of challenges, preparation is key in ensuring your next move is seamless and you’re settled into your new home as quickly as possible.

In the weeks leading up to moving complete any admin tasks including connecting utilities and updating your contents insurance policies. Investigate whether your possessions are covered when they are located beyond your residence boundary such as during transit or when stored in cages, cupboards and communal garage areas.

Your Marshall White property manager can offer assistance by providing recommendations and contact details for a range of service professionals, for example cleaners. There are also useful apps such as Airtasker which link you with workers who can complete odd jobs like cleaning, disassembling and re-assembling furniture or even packing and moving boxes, perfect if you are time poor or on a tight budget.

Access is one of the key considerations of moving into an apartment. It’s essential to plan your route and keep in mind truck access and parking can be especially difficult for bustling inner city streets. Larger apartment buildings usually require new residents to book the use of lifts in advance with concierge and in some cases charge a fee for this service.

Your Marshall White property manager can assist with some of the planning, they can provide recommendations and contact details for a range of quality trades people.

‘It’s important to respect common areas and other residents in apartment buildings, spaces such as under stairwells are not general storage areas. Security needs to be preserved, a door can’t be blocked open if it alters the security of the building. It may be necessary to arrange an extra person who can stay by the door,’ says Paula Matlock, property management director.

Make the most of moving and purge belongings as you pack. If you have trouble deciding what items to part with, acclaimed tidying consultant Marie Kondo presents an excellent framework for discarding items that no longer serve a purpose. The goal is that when you move into your new home you are surrounded by possessions you really love, connect with and ‘spark joy’.

If you are relocating to a rental property, aim to complete the condition report while the home is still empty and be sure to take plenty of photos as well.

As a final step, stay motivated! Marshall White property manager Bianca Montibeller recommends, ‘Unpack everything the first day or two of your move, otherwise there may be boxes lingering for weeks.’
