The Jackalope Hotel on the Mornington Peninsula has fast become the coveted luxury destination for those seeking elegant design paired with incredible cuisine. One of the striking features of this destination is the custom furniture designed by Australia’s pre-eminent female furniture designer, Wilhelmina McCarroll of Zuster Furniture. Wilhelmina and her sister Fleur Sibbel own and manage Zuster, which is the Dutch word for sister and this three generation business has gone from strength to strength in recent years.
Jackalope was conceived by the top creative minds in the business, in particular, Louis Li with Carr Design Group who worked closely alongside Zuster’s bespoke furniture design team to create a series of furniture items that reflected Li’s passion for art, design, architecture and extraordinary experiences.
The result is a series of bespoke designed furniture items that fill Jackalope’s 46 guest rooms, hotel bar and outdoor areas with a sense of formality and grandeur. Jackalope is one of Zuster’s most eminent luxury hotel projects to date.
“We were looking to create pieces that looked and felt like pieces of art,” said Wilhelmina. “Every piece was carefully considered and finely crafted, right down to the last detail,” she said. “It was an exercise in expressive refinement; the result is a sense of authentic beauty and innate luxury. Made just for Jackalope.”
Themes of alchemy saw Zuster incorporate touches of precious bronze, brass, silver and gold into a rich material palette of American Oak and solid marble. Elements of metallic surfacing and quilted leather stitching add depth and texture the design scheme.
“The hotel has a very dark, moody feel about it. The furniture sits within this as a series of visually arresting elements that are at once sculptural and functional,”

Coinciding with the opening of Jackalope was the launch of Zuster’s Embellish Collection. This range of bespoke furniture solutions for luxury hotel spaces, formal living quarters and high end corporate environment. However it’s Zuster’s Jewel Collection that has seen its way into luxury homes throughout Melbourne.
When you select Zuster, your bespoke order is drawn up in CAD for your approval. It is then passed to Zuster’s craftspeople who form each piece by hand, from start to finish. High quality timber is used, and a durable long-lasting finish applied. Grain is matched down to the millimetre and timber cut to flow seamlessly. Bespoke statements are made through your choice of size, finish, base, handles, and drawers or doors. Doors and drawers are embellished with your choice of hand-blown glass, timber, stone, crystal and brass handle options. And best of all, there’s short 8 week delivery.
