The Transformation of 64 Oban Street, South Yarra

The before and after images tell the story of the transformation and highlight what can be achieved by bringing together the right partners.

Behind the beautiful images of perfectly styled luxurious homes there’s often the story of how the home was transformed. One such home is 64 Oban Street South Yarra, currently represented by Marshall White’s Mark Harris. We spoke to Mark about why this renovation is so special and what it can teach sellers about the renovation journey.

“The renovation was originally intended and built for the owners to reside, so it was planned for a real family with discerning taste,” said Mark. “While this has been called a renovation, the reality is it’s a complete rebuild – a new house with the facade the only feature remaining from the original home. Having completely new services is very attractive to many buyers. Also, buyers love the external period features of a Victorian home coupled with contemporary architecture and the internal space and light that comes with such an extensive build,” he said.

Meticulously crafted by Secull Architect, Scott Davies from Technique Construction Group, the four bedroom plus study residence is set in a serene South Yarra cul de sac. The interiors boast a skillful maximisation of natural light with details including polished concrete and natural oak floors, copper features and exposed brick walls using materials repurposed from the original home. There is an expansive open plan living and dining zone and a large sunny courtyard. Accompanying the space is a superb kitchen with an Italian marble island bench, European appliances and a butler’s pantry with laundry facilities. Living quarters include a master suite on the ground floor with walk in robe and ensuite, and on the first floor are two further bedrooms with built in robes and an outstanding light filled second master suite with walk in robe and sky lit bathroom. A central bathroom, additional powder room and study/home office with an internal courtyard add further appeal to this home.

“The owners main aim for this project was to use all space available, and with a very tight block of land creativity was required to achieve a result including four bedrooms, three bathrooms plus office with a focus on entertaining,” said Mark. “No expense was spared with some features of note being the cabinetry, specialty lighting, exceptional fittings, the heating and cooling solutions with nothing left to do in a very low maintenance family home.”

The before and after images tell the story of the transformation and highlight what can be achieved by bringing together the right partners. “Total construction was 14 months with the total project taking 39 months so the key to something this significant is patience, time, a great builder, fantastic contractors and more patience” said Mark.
