Developer Insight – Metrobuild

Established in 1992, Metrobuild is a privately-owned development and construction company with a long-standing commitment to quality workmanship complemented by an earnest, hands-on approach.

With so many new developments being offered in Melbourne, discerning property buyers carefully research developers and demand quality. As part of our ongoing series on Developer Insights, we have posed pertinent questions to Toorak based builder, Metrobuild.

Established in 1992, Metrobuild is a privately-owned development and construction company with a long-standing commitment to quality workmanship complemented by an earnest, hands-on approach. Since the company’s inception, Metrobuild has built a strong, diverse portfolio of residential apartments, focusing primarily in Toorak and surrounding suburbs, and catering to a discerning demographic. We spoke to Metrobuild’s Managing Director, Keith Ding, to gain an inside perspective of the company’s approach.

How would you describe your design style?

Traditional prestige combined with modern day luxury with a meticulous attention to detail. We carefully curate finishes, fixtures and fittings so our properties withstand the test of time both aesthetically and functionally. We prefer design that complements existing form whilst also standing out. Ultimately, we always have the end user in mind.

What is your secret to ensuring your clients are satisfied so you gain many repeat projects? 

Metrobuild proudly upholds three key values: quality, experience and professionalism. Being consistent in all of these areas means that we are in the best possible position to ensure our clients are satisfied before, during, and after handover of each property. A testament to client satisfaction is when they are repeat clients who look to buy other Metrobuild projects for family members, or recommend us to their friends or voluntarily let potential purchasers into their home to show off the workmanship of a Metrobuild product. That’s when we know we are achieving client satisfaction.

What are the benefits of being a three-generation business? 

Understanding. My father and I established Metrobuild in 1992 as a family business and he provided me with invaluable resources and mentorship to take the helm. Over the years I have been lucky enough to have my two children follow in my footsteps who both now play active and important roles within the company. Because this industry has been in our blood for so long, there is an innate understanding of the processes, expectations and output that Metrobuild prides itself on when delivering each and every product to the market.

Commitment: there is a great appreciation of commitment and accountability that is often impossible to generate without such an intimate connection to the business. Since I was born, I have always witnessed my father’s hard working and honest nature in every business venture, therefore there is a mutual commitment and understanding to see our family business prosper and commemorate my father’s admirable work ethic.

Long-term outlook: With commitment comes long-term outlook. This requires patience and long term perspective which allows for strategic decision making in all facets of the business. It also means that everyone is willing to help each other out and wear several hats within the company. This broadens skill set and expands ideas to ensure success and the most beneficial outcome.

What do you like most about building apartments in Toorak? 

Intimate knowledge of the market as we have been focusing on Toorak and its surrounding suburbs since Metrobuild’s inception. Therefore being in the best position to deliver a product that we believe will meet and hopefully, exceed expectations of the market.

Also dealing with a discerning demographic who are intelligent, abreast with market movements and they know what they want. It is a nice challenge to ensure we are always on the pulse so we can deliver a product that is sought after by such a sophisticated target market.

Plus the market stability. Toorak being predominantly a downsizers market means that there is ample demand for empty nesters looking to downsize to high quality, low maintenance apartment living where they can easily lock up and leave whenever they please. We have been delivering this type of product to the market for almost 30 years and we pride ourselves on being proactive whenever we design and build each and every project.

How do you maintain high levels of craftsmanship in your projects?

By cultivating and maintaining relationships with consultants, contractors and clients. We always prefer to work with the same consultants and contractors on each and every project when we can so we spend a lot of time selecting who to work with to ensure we have the same level of expectation and understanding when it comes to completing a project. Fostering meaningful relationships means more accountability and there is opportunity to leverage off each other’s expertise to achieve the most mutually beneficial result.

What are some of your exciting upcoming projects?

Hawksburn House located at 387 – 403 Malvern Road, South Yarra which comprises 26apartments over 5 storeys with 500sqm of retail on the ground floor targeting premium operators. These are high end, 2 and 3 bedrooms, spacious with premium fixtures and fittings. The top floor is crowned by a spectacular Penthouse complete with wrap around terrace, swimming pool, 4 car garage and private lift.
