Following on from an incredibly successful first season in 2017, Melbourne Design Week returns with a highly esteemed program exploring the effects of design on contemporary life and runs from March 15 until March 25.

Showcasing local and international artists across a variety of disciplines, the program features over 160 events including talks by leading designers, installations and exhibitions, building tours, international speakers, workshops and panel discussions, developed in partnership between the National Gallery of Victoria and the Victorian Government. Here we present a selection of some of the must-see events on the program this year.

Triennial of Contemporary Art and Design

The 2018 program coincides with the National Gallery of Victoria’s Triennial of Contemporary Art and Design which explores art and design across cultures, scales, geographies and perspectives and hints at a world on the brink of collapse. With more than 100 artists and designers hailing from 32 countries, the inaugural exhibition traverses all floors of the gallery. Highlights include the Eternity Buddha in Nirvana created by Chinese artist Xu Zhen and PetLamp from Spain, created in collaboration with women from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

Open State by Open House

The Open State program celebrates a network of leading Victorian design innovators including commissioners, designers, studios, researchers, educators and manufacturers. Inviting viewers to contemplate what good design can achieve for individuals, communities, businesses and society as a whole, each innovator’s design story will be examined through an ‘open access’ model. Highlights include the Emporium tour and the Melbourne School of Engineering tour.

Denfair Design Loop

A selection of Melbourne’s finest designers are participating in this exhibition, responding to the theme ‘Celebration of Material’ and presenting a range of installations that emphasise the dialogue between designer and material.

New Narratives

Featuring celebrated international speakers, this keynote lecture presented by Melbourne Art Book Fair explores the concept of ‘good’ design and the potential of design and publishing to affect social change. Notable guests include curator Yolande van der Heide, artist and publisher Julieta Aranda and design researcher Tamar Shafrir.

Victorian Design Challenge

Developed as part of a Victorian Government strategy to strengthen, support and promote the state’s design industry, this year Melbourne Design Week also includes a newly launched design competition. In partnership with VicHealth, the challenge strives to link creativity with business and community, emphasising the role of design as a catalyst to drive innovation and enrich culture and society. Participants are invited to respond to the question ‘How might we increase the resilience of today’s young people?’ Shortlisted competitors will be announced during Melbourne Design Week.

Melbourne Design Week runs from March 15 to March 25 at the National Gallery of Victoria and various partner venues around Melbourne. Entry is free, see the full program here.
