Weathering Storms, How to Protect your Home

Strong winds, heavy rain, storms and extreme weather conditions can present challenges for property owners and tenants as well as property managers. Storms can wreak havoc in a matter of minutes, with flash flooding as well as fallen trees and branches. We advise looking at the following areas to protect your home and effectively navigate any predicted inclement weather.
Assess Your Property
It is crucial to take the time to identify the hazards around your property and the potential risks ahead of a storm. Areas to check include your roof, any potential drainage issues, problems with water run off from neighbours and large branches around your property
Remove Branches and Loose Debris
If you are concerned about overhanging branches, now is the time to consult a gardener. While a gardener may be provided for in your lease agreement, ongoing maintenance between visits is still required and will prove helpful in averting issues ahead of stormy weather. Check with your property manager on the best course of action concerning essential garden maintenance.
Clean Out Gutters
Clearing out gutters and drains are an excellent starting point for preventing flooding. We also recommend keeping an eye on the drainage in your street and contacting your local council if there is an issue or blockage. If flooding does occur we recommend immediately calling the SES on 132 500. Again, if you are ever unsure our Property Management department can advise you.
Secure Loose Items
Outdoor items such as children’s toys, pool and alfresco furniture should be stored safely or moved indoors ahead of the storm. Wild winds can not only damage these items but can turn them into flying hazards.
Prepare an Emergency Kit
Stocking up on a kit with candles, torches, batteries, a portable radio and first aid supplies will prepare you for any emergencies ahead, including power outages and storm related issues.
