Elwood, there truly is something for everyone in this urban village by the sea.
Elwood, A Village By The Sea
Get lost down a plethora of picturesque winding streets, trace the Bay Trail on your bike or simply stroll along the beach, down to the Brighton Baths or change direction to the St Kilda Pier. There is no shortage of beautiful vistas in Elwood, boasting a leafy village atmosphere, with easy access to the both the city and the beach.
Marshall White’s Neil Harris has been an Elwood resident for 21 years, originally moving to the area from Brighton. Neil says, ‘Living by the bay, people here are very relaxed and it’s a tight knit group that tend to stay in the area. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.’
Elwood’s enduring appeal attracts a diverse population, with an eclectic collection of residential properties on offer. Classic period homes are interspersed with single fronted cottages, Art Deco mansions, spacious 60s and 70s style apartments, as well as more contemporary builds, all enticing families and young residents seeking a relaxed beachside locale, close to the eclectic nightlife of St Kilda and Chapel Street.
‘Living by the bay, people here are very relaxed and it’s a tight knit group that tend to stay in the area. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.’
Village living is exemplified along Ormond Road, where you’ll find an abundance of vibrant cafes, restaurants, organic supermarkets and unique boutiques. Locals flock to A Girl Called Jayne for excellent coffee and brunch options, while Combi offers health-conscious beautifully presented smoothie bowls and raw treats. Down the road, Dandelion, a local favourite, serves up award winning modern Vietnamese. Neil suggests the caramelised pork hock with tamarind and Peking duck rice paper rolls as musts.
An abundance of walking tracks, parklands and excellent schools have attracted many families to the area. Family friendly Elsternwick and Elwood Parks provide picturesque playgrounds for children and a popular dog park.
Neil recommends Ormond Road for its excellent lifestyle living. ‘It’s close to the esplanade and the proximity to Elwood Village, Elwood Primary and Secondary College make this a highly desired pocket.’
As St Kilda’s quiet canal-side neighbour, Elwood is often described as a storybook suburb with a peaceful yet vibrant feel. The area is also well serviced by public transport. Jumping on the number 67 tram will take you straight into the city and buses from Elsternwick Station connect to St Kilda, Brighton, Monash University and both Southland and Chadstone retail meccas.
