Van Gogh and the Seasons
From local artists’ studios, community festivals and beautiful creative spaces to internationally renowned exhibitions – Melbourne embraces it all.
Melbourne is a city known for its love of art and for its celebration of creativity. From local artists’ studios, community festivals and beautiful creative spaces to internationally renowned exhibitions at the National Gallery of Victoria featuring some of the world’s greatest masterpieces – the city embraces it all. We are consistently exposed to incredible works and breath-taking talent, and the NGV’s latest offering doesn’t disappoint.
From the 28Th April until 9th July 2017 the NGV, in partnership with Art Exhibitions Australia, will present Van Gogh and the Seasons for the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series. Curated by Sjraar van Heugten (independent art historian and former Head of Collections at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam), Van Gogh and the Seasons is internationally exclusive to Melbourne.
The seasons had profound meaning for Van Gogh and his work includes a plethora of painted scenes that richly evoke the sensory experiences associated with each individual season. The exhibition invites viewers to contemplate Van Gogh’s life and experiences through his observations of the seasonal changes within the natural world.
“We are consistently exposed to incredible works and breath-taking talent, and the NGV’s latest offering doesn’t disappoint.”
The gallery is also providing an opportunity to celebrate the opening weekend of the exhibition by attention a talk by exhibition curator, Sjraar van Heugten, as he explores Van Gogh’s love of nature in both his life and work.
