Desired Skills and Experience for Sales Agents
Real estate sales experience will always be beneficial, however prior work experience and skill sets in related areas such as customer service, hospitality, retail and general sales is also advantageous, in addition, real estate experience gained from buying, selling or even developing property is also an excellent introduction. You will also need outstanding interpersonal, communicational, time management and organisational skills; the ability to negotiate win-win outcomes; passion; resilience; strong personal presentation; to be physically fit and to possess and on-going commitment to self-improvement.
Necessary qualifications for Sales Agents
The required qualification for working in real estate sales is the ‘Agents Representative Certificate’. To qualify for this certificate you must be at least 18 years of age and have a registered address in Victoria. Upon commencing your employment as an agents representative you will need to have a police check within 14 days and you will need an 'Authority to Act' signed by the company and sent to the Business Licensing Authority. Optional courses in real estate that may help you reach your career goals are: REIV training for Agent’s Representatives, Traineeship in Real Estate and the Estate Agents License (you need an Estate Agents License to be a Branch Manager, Director or owner of a real estate). Some of the favourable University Degrees are Bachelor of Business or Bachelor of Marketing. Marshall White are pleased to provide our sales team with professional training on a regular basis. There is also Scripts and Dialouges and Role Play training with some of our best sales people, additionally we offer auctioneer training for sales staff who are interested in becoming an auctioneer.
Duties and Responsibilities for Sales Agents
Appraising properties, obtaining listings of properties for sale, marketing properties, seeking out and introducing buyers to properties, offering advice to clients on market conditions and handling general sales enquiry, arranging and overseeing open for inspections, negotiating sales, liaising with legal representatives, suppliers and tradespeople.

With respect to personality, confidence and customer service skills are imperative to be a good operator and to get repeat business, it is also important to be a team player which plays a huge part in building successful working relationship. Career Path for Sales Agents
At Marshall White we offer the possibility to all agents to work individually or as part of a team. Today many successful agents also establish a small team of their own e.g. sales agents / sales assistant(s) and/or administrational assistant/personal assistant. Several of our Directors commenced with the Company as sales agents and by virtue of their performance were offered positions as Directors, therefore the career path you chose is up to you!
Hours and Leave for Sales Agents
The hours in real estate can be long and often include late nights and weekend work. As a general rule, Marshall White encourages sales staff to have Friday or part thereof away from the office, and we are closed on Sunday. You can expect to work between 45-55 hours per week at the busiest time of year, with an average working week between 40-45 hours. Most sales staff chose to take leave in late December and January as it is generally a quieter season in real estate sales.
